What is Forest School?
Forest School is an innovative educational approach to outdoor play and learning. Its philosophy is to encourage and inspire individuals of any age through positive outdoor experiences.
Forest School is not only an opportunity for participants to learn and explore the natural world around them but also a chance for self-discovery. Through participating in Forest School sessions individuals will have the opportunity to develop their:
- Self-awareness
- Self-regulation
- Intrinsic motivation
- Empathy
- Good social communication skills
- Independence
- Risk taking
- A positive mental attitude, self-esteem and confidence
Our sessions are learner led, which means participants follow their interests, choosing what to do, when to do it and how to do it. As a result learning will occur naturally through exploration and discovery. Following the learner-led approach is very simple, one small spark of interest from the learner can ignite a plethora of learning opportunities. We support the participants by offering children and young people the chance to engage in a diverse range of activities in an outdoor environment.
Who is it aimed at?
Traditionally Forest School is aimed at children and young people, however there is an increase in demand for adult and family based sessions. In our opinion there is no age limitation to the enjoyment and benefits that Forest School can bring.
How does it work?
Forest School can work in a variety of ways whether it be as a one off or as continual block of sessions. There is also an opportunity to use it as an after school club to extend the curriculum. Sessions could cover specific themes such as team work or to support the curriculum with links to science, maths, design and technology for example. As you can see Forest School is a diverse and versatile tool that can be utilised in such a wide range of ways.
Currently our sessions are delivered on the site of the client, however we are in the process of securing a Forest School site we can use on a more permanent basis.
